Massimo Vitali

receives Lucie Award for Lifetime Achievement

Italian photographer Massimo Vitali has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the prestigious Lucie Awards, recognizing his profound contribution to the field of photography over the past three decades.

Vitali first gained international acclaim in 1994 with his series of large-format panoramic photographs depicting Italian beach scenes. Set against the backdrop of political and social transformation in Italy, these meticulously composed images capture public recreational spaces—beaches, lakes, ski resorts—as sites of collective behavior and quiet observation. Beneath the sun-drenched surface, however, Vitali’s works reveal precise social observations. From a distance the artist examines the behaviour of tourists in these places, designated to be experienced by them. His images convey the staging of leisure time, of standardised recreation, the urge to be seen and the desire to belong.

The Lucie Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements across all areas of photographs including journalism, fine art, advertising, portraiture, nature, sports, and humanitarian work.
